Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy focuses on the relationship between physical sensations, emotional experiences, and patterns of response. Many individuals notice that stress, tension, and both past and present experiences can be reflected in the body. At times, these experiences may show up as physical discomfort, restlessness, or a sense of disconnection. This approach can offer a space to explore these connections with curiosity, awareness, and respect for your individual pace and comfort.

My work is informed by training in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy for trauma, an approach developed for working with trauma and the body, as well as attachment-informed and mindfulness-based perspectives. I strive to offer sessions that are collaborative, and reflective, with a focus on helping you build awareness of your internal experiences and develop practical strategies to support you in daily life.

Somatic therapy can be explored in relation to a variety of experiences, including:

  • Stress and tension patterns that may be held in the body

  • Emotional awareness and regulation, including noticing how emotions are experienced physically

  • Responses shaped by past or present experiences, including habitual patterns of reaction

  • Connection between physical sensations and emotional states

  • Developing grounding, regulation, and self-awareness practices

I approach these areas collaboratively, recognizing that each person’s experience is unique. Together, we can explore what feels most relevant to you, while maintaining a pace that supports your sense of safety and choice.

My approach to somatic therapy integrates several complementary perspectives:

Somatic Awareness
Drawing from Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, I may invite gentle attention to physical sensations, posture, movement, and nervous system responses. This process can support awareness of how experiences may be held in the body, without requiring you to revisit or relive past events. The focus remains on present-moment experience and what feels manageable for you.

Attachment-Informed Perspective
I use attachment theory as a framework to understand how early and ongoing relational experiences may influence emotional and physiological responses. This perspective can help make sense of patterns in how you respond to stress, connection, and disconnection.

Mindful and Solution-Focused Elements
I incorporate mindful awareness and solution-focused strategies to support practical skill-building. This may include noticing small shifts, identifying existing strengths, and exploring ways to integrate new awareness into everyday life.

In somatic therapy sessions, I aim to create a space that is respectful, collaborative, and responsive to your needs. Sessions may include:

  • Gentle exploration of bodily sensations and internal awareness

  • Opportunities to reflect on connections between physical sensations and emotional experiences

  • Introduction of grounding or regulation practices that you can adapt to your comfort level

  • Ongoing check-ins to ensure that the pace and focus feel appropriate for you

  • Space for both verbal reflection and non-verbal awareness

There is no expectation to engage in any exercise that feels uncomfortable. Participation is always optional, and I aim to work with you to adjust the process as needed. The goal is not to “fix” or change experiences quickly, but to support a gradual process of awareness and understanding.

Somatic therapy may be a good fit if you are interested in exploring the connection between your body and your emotional experiences, or if you are looking to develop greater awareness of how you respond to stress and daily challenges. Some individuals are drawn to this approach because it offers a complement to talk-based methods, while others are simply curious about how physical and emotional processes interact.

There is no single way to engage in somatic therapy, and it can be adapted to suit a wide range of preferences and comfort levels. You are encouraged to move at your own pace and to remain actively involved in shaping the direction of the work.
